It was time for the 2012 British Academy Film Awards at London's Royal Opera House on Sunday evening, and there was one big winner of the famous gold plaques.

Silent movie The Artist was awarded with as many as seven BAFTA trophies at the 65th annual awards – with the plaques including Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin.

Despite being shot in black and white film and being free of any dialogue, the film still won best original screenplay, with that trophy again going to Michel Hazanavicius.

The director was mostly unknown outside his native France until the last year – but his film also scooped BAFTA plaques in the categories of music, cinematography and costume design.

Cold War thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy got the nod for outstanding British film, while the award for best adapted screenplay went to co-writers Peter Straughan and his late wife Bridget O'Connor.
